French avertir (“to warn, give notice to”), formerly also spelled advertir, Latin advertere (“to turn to”). The ending was probably influenced by the noun advertisement. See advert.

  1. (transitive) To give public notice of; to announce publicly; as to advertise goods for sale, a lost article, the sailing day of a vessel, a political meeting.
  2. (transitive) To provide information about in communications media, especially about goods or services for sale.
  3. (intransitive) To provide information about a person or goods and services to influence others.
    It pays to advertise.
