The first few of the "Dune" novels as previously mentioned are excellent if you enjoy political and military conflict. You might want to check out the list of hugo award winners, as this is Science Fiction's equivalent of an Oscar. If you liked "The Lord of the Rings" movies, you might enjoy reading the original trilogy by Tolkien. It was MUCH better than the movies, great as they are. A shorter read, and I think better group of characters, in the same world as "The Lord of the Rings" is the earlier Tolkien novel "The Hobbit". The "Foundation" and "Robot" series by Issac Assimov are excellent.
