What fantasy/science fiction books are 800 pages or more?
Q. What fantasy/science fiction books are 800 pages or more? Besides the following which I've already read: Song of Ice and Fire, Sword of Truth, Wheel of Time, Farseer/Liveship Traders/Tawny Man, Harry Potter, and the Malazan Empire. I already read The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings.

A. Any of the Chung Kuo novels by David Wingrove are at least 700 pages a piece and there are 8 of them. Most of Tad Williams books and series are ridiculously long. Dhalgren is a great post-apocalyptic novel by Samuel R. Delaney that runs pretty close to 800 pages. Even Robert McCammon's book (Swan Song) is over 800 pages. Stephen King's The Stand is over 1000 pages but that's not really sci fi or fantasy. Battlefield Earth by L.Ron Hubbard is another novel that ridiculously too long (and a waste of time in my opinion...don't bother reading it)

A. Book of the New Sun -Gene Wolfe. A sort of combined sci/fi fantasy book which is the story of Severian the torturer. "This is the first-person narrative of Severian, a lowly apprentice torturer blessed and cursed with a photographic memory, whose travels lead him through the marvels of far-future Urth, and who--as revealed near the beginning--eventually becomes his land's sole ruler or Autarch. On the surface it's a colorful story with all the classic ingredients: growing up, adventure, sex, betrayal, murder, exile, battle, monsters, and mysteries to be solved. (Only well into book 2 do we realize what saved Severian's life in chapter 1.) For lovers of literary allusions, they are plenty here: a Dickensian cemetery scene, a torture-engine [cont.]

What fantasy and/or science fiction audiobooks would you recommend?
Q. Please tell me your favorites so I can listen to them! =) If possible, I would like a list under categories "fantasy," "science fiction," or "both." A special notification if the title has good music would also be nice - good music is a nice bonus but not a requirement. As always, thank you for participating and helping out!

A. A great one I listened to was "Spirits in the Wires" by Charles de Lint. It is not necessarily my favorite de Lint book, but the audiobook presentation is one of the best I've ever heard. It features two speakers, a male and a female, and they alternate depending on the character's gender, but they each know how to do a variety of voices and accents. "Spirits in the Wires" is part of de Lint's Newford series. Another good book from that series is "The Onion Girl," which has been recently made into an audiobook, though I haven't heard it yet. I'm hoping my library will one day carry it, and I may order it from Amazon, if the price goes down. I am currently listening to the audiobook of Richard Matheson's "What Dreams May Come," which is… [cont.]

For fantasy book lovers: Any one have good sugestions for Science Fiction Fantasy books to read?
Q. I'm having trouble finding new, really good material. Some of my favorite authors include J.K. Rowling, David Eddings, Majorie B. Kellogg, Garth Nix, etc. Centered more towards adult, high fantasy preferably. Thanks!

A. My personal favorites are Mercedes Lackey and Anne McCaffrey. Mercedes Lackey is sword and sorcery fantasy with well developed characters and an easy to read writing style. Anne McCaffrey has quite a few books dealing with dragons. Mercedes Lackey's Heralds of Valdmar series is by far my favorite fantasy series; Anne McCaffrey's Dragonrider's of Pern is a close second.

A. Have you ever tried anything by Robert Heinlein or Piers Anthony? They are really great science fiction author and very renowned in their field. Anthony likes to fill his book with puns and Heinlein's stories are offbeat but fun. also, if you don't mind some young adult stories, the Pendragon series by D.J. Machale is really good. A boy finds out that he has to save the entire universe, Halla, from falling to an evil power. Each book builds on the previous ones and they each take place somewhere differnet. For instance, one world is ocmpletely underwater and another is in 1940's New York. Happy reading!

How is the city of ember science fiction/fantasy?
Q. i understand that the story takes place in the future and is based on an underground city, which makes it sci-fi. But are there any other reasons? and how is it an example of fantasy? thankss! (:

A. Think about it: how many civilizations are trapped underground, the vary thought automatically makes it a fantasy. the term fantasy doesn't always have to mean unicorns and elves, The definition of fantasy is :a creation of the imaginative faculty whether expressed or merely conceived: as a fanciful design or invention, the power or process of creating especially unrealistic or improbable mental images in response to psychological need Although the author makes it seem very realistic, the thought is still somewhat hard to wrap ones mind around.

Asked by Karate Kid - Mon Jun 2 16:35:16 2008 - - 13 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Do you really want me to get started on this one? Okay, you're the one that asked the question... Yes, there's a difference. Science fiction should have some base in science, even if it's a tiny base, but fantasy doesn't have to. For instance (this could not be the right example) fantasy can have flying horses and there's no problem with that but if those same flying horses are in science fiction there should be some reason why the horses can fly (alien, anti-gravity, whatever). Fantasy can be written without any theories to back up your story but science fiction should have some base, some theoretical fact that makes sense.

A. For scifi, I will need more details to provide you with scientific explanations. What I need to know is: what does the portal travel *through*. For example, a portal leading to alternate dimensions are considerably different than a space/time portal that takes you to a different location in space/time. Then, there are portals to "macroscopic" or "microscopic" "universes", portals which allow only viewing and not travel, portals (such as a tesseract) which bend local space from 3 dimensions to 4 dimensions... I think you get the idea. You can e-mail me with more details - where the portals lead and how you want characters to be able to access the portals. Fantasy is different, since fantasy normally relies on a mystic, rather than… [cont.]

Awesome new works of science fiction or fantasy?
Q. I read a lot. I read everything, but I enjoy the science fiction and fantasy genre for recreational reading. I'm looking for awesome books by talented authors that I haven't already read. Please have read the book you recommend, and tell me a little bit about why I should put it on the top of my reading list. Thanks. Thanks for answering. Yes, I've read most of Neil Gaiman's work, and I am a big fan. I've also recently read the available books in Naomi Novik's series. Liked them too. These are favorites of mine, and I'm happy to see them recommended -- excellent -- but I'm still looking for more.

A. Okay, I have a few suggestions! Are you familiar with the work of Diana Wynne Jones? She's one of the Uk's most respected fantasy writers, (Neil Gaiman is a fan of hers!) Most of her books are aimed at children/teens, but she's done adult fantasies too. Here's an Amazon link to one: I'm assuming you've read the "Dark Materials Trilogy by Philip Pullman? Such an obvious choice, but you didn't say what you've already read ... so I'm guessing you're already familiar with this. In case you're not familiar with it, here's the Amazon link: Another book you might like (recently released) is "Stoneheart" by Charlie Fletcher. Is Dragonriders of Pern science fiction or fantasy?
Q. I'm a bit interested in Dragonriders of Pern when I saw it in the bookshops. But when I search wikipedia, it said that it is science fiction which I definitely hate. However, there are dragons stuff inside ,so if you guys know anything please tell me. I don't actually hate science fiction, I'm just a bit tired of planets, spaceships, attacking, bombing and stuff. I really dislike Star Wars because those lightsaber fights drive me crazy and gives me serious headaches.

A. I have read all of the series, it is fantasy and great fun. It is set on a different planet called Pern, but that is the only scifi about it. It is more of a fantasy adventure novel series. I dont like the scifi you describe either, so this should be right up your street.

What is the name of this fantasy/science fiction short story?
Q. What is the name of this fantasy/SF short story? I think I read it in an anthology of 1930s SF. The book was edited by Isaac Asimov. The story was a tale of a society where a ruler was reincarnated by artificial means, and some political ne'er do wells speeded up the process to their advantage. In the end the bad guy was relegated to a wheel of torture which would perpetually keep him alive, but torture him. The person had created it himself, not knowing the ruler was on to him. The book was stolen & I can't find the story. It is an anthology ABOUT the 30's "Golden Age" or "Before the Golden Age". I think it is a 50s or 60s publishing date. The author of the story is one of the big names. I thought it was wheel of god, but I looked at that… [cont.]

I can't tell from the authors/titles which story it might be. You best bet might be to find a copy in a local library (or on inter-library loan) and take a look for yourself.

A. The best place to research on the biggest seller's for this type of thing is at a chain book store, B&N or Borders. You'll see Azimov's and Hitchcock and a couple other big selling genre mags. I suggest buying a few issues of it while you're there. While you're at the store pick up the newest editions of Best American Short Stories, and the O'Henry Prize Stories and look at the listings they have in the back. Also take a browse through this web page: www.newpages.com It's an excellent resource. Good luck.
